About the event

The Enola Gay: 80 Years
At a special Lunch With Books program on Wednesday, August 6 -- 80 years to the day since The Enola Gay B-29 Superfortress bomber dropped the atomic bomb known as "Little Boy" on the Japanese city of Hiroshima -- model-maker Gregory Gikas will return to display his hand-made model of the historic plane and share with us the details of what happened that fateful day. This event marked the first time an atomic bomb was used in warfare. Piloted by Paul Tibbets and named for his mother, The Enola Gay is now part of the collection at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. A longtime former teacher, Gikas will also bring his model of a modern stealth bomber for comparison. Gikas, who recently shared with us his model of the HMS Titanic, painstakingly assembles his works at scale from an array of found materials.
