This masterclass is on the Winter Solstice day (day of the shortest daytime and longest nighttime) in the Southern Hemisphere. What better time to do some nurturing asana and pranayama, then delve into truly becoming relaxed through yoga nidra. Then, as we still remain in the colder months even though the days are gradually getting longer until night and day are equal in September at the Spring Equinox, continue to practice these techniques of ultimate self-care.
A session of just on 2 hours, focusing on "Yoga Nidra - psychic sleep" - technique of deep relaxation for the second hour, after some discussion about the practice. This deep relaxation technique accesses all 5 koshas, or sheaths/bodies, from the physical to the causal. All that you need to do is to lie in shavasana (classical relaxation pose or corpse pose) - covering yourself with a blanket to make sure that you will be warm - and follow the technique, spoken systematically by the instructor. 1 hour of this is equivalent to 4 hours of restful sleep.
Bring yoga mat, cushion/s, blanket (essential for covering yourself during the long deep relaxation), water bottle. If you need a bolster cushion, or 2 equally sized ordinary cushions, under the knees/lower thigh to make sure that your back will be comfortable, please ensure that you bring these.
Some gentle postures (asanas) and breathing practices (pranayamas) will be included beforehand (in the first hour), such as:
• Pawanmuktasana 1 (the joint maintenance series)
• Marjariasana (cat pose)
• Khandarasana (bridge pose)
• Shashankasana (pose of the child)
• Shavasana (corpse pose)
• Full yogic breathing (sitting or lying on the back)
• Nadi shodhana pranayama (alternate nostril breathing)
• Ujjayi pranayama (throat breath; whispering/ psychic)
• Bhramari pranayama - the name ‘bhramari’ literally means 'the bee'. This is the humming pranayama which is used primarily in the practice of nada yoga, the yoga of psychic sounds. Bhramari pranayama serves in nada yoga to stimulate and to awaken the awareness of the nada, the subtle sounds within the practitioner.
