What is a session?
A session is an informal gathering of musicians playing traditional tunes together—no sheet music, no setlists, just shared repertoire and spontaneous collaboration. Sessions happen all over the world, from Irish pubs to folk festivals, and knowing how to join in is like holding a passport to global musical friendships!
This isn’t a class for learning your instrument from scratch—it’s a space to learn how to play in a session setting, pick up tunes by ear, and contribute to the flow of the music. Whether you’re new to session culture or looking to expand your repertoire, this is a great way to connect, grow, and play with others.
How it works:
🎼 4-5 PM – Learn new material together
🎶 5-6 PM – Review our community repertoire (Come by at 5 PM for the closest thing to a public session in Whangārei right now!)
No need to commit to the whole term—drop-ins are encouraged! If you’ve ever wanted to join a session but weren’t sure how, this is the perfect way to get started.
Come by, bring your instrument, and let’s make some music! 🎵 See less
