Join us for a five-varietal honey tasting at The Westport Library! Learn about both modern and traditional beekeeping trends in this illuminating Verso University presentation on beekeeping and honey hunting.
Speaker Catherine Wolko, of Watertown’s The Humble Bee Honey Company, will discuss the history of the honey harvest, purposeful beekeeping, hives of the past and present, as well as the composition of honey and why it crystalizes. Explore the differences among varieties of honey, the reasons why some honey is dark and some light, and why honey doesn't need to be pasteurized.
**Prizes will be given away following completion of the program!**
A variety of different types of honey and Monarch butterfly tagging kits will be available for purchase.
Registration is required. Please plan to arrive early to browse the literature tables and meet the speaker. This event is designed for adults, but any child with an interest in bees is encouraged to attend with a parent or guardian.
Catherine Wolko is a second-generation beekeeper and owner of both The Humble Bee Honey Company in Watertown and The Hive @ The Pin, a farm store and honey house located in the historic Pin Shops in Oakville, Connecticut. She is a listed speaker for the Federated Garden Clubs in Connecticut. She is also a member of the Back Yard Beekeepers Association, The American Beekeeping Federation, the Watertown Lions Club, and is a proud member of The Connecticut Farm Bureau. In addition, she is an advocate for the farming community and for beekeepers and volunteers at community food banks. She has spoken at libraries, churches, schools, symposiums, and land trusts throughout the state of Connecticut. Her father was an avid gardener and became a beekeeper by chance after responding to an advertisement for free bees. Her gift of gab and love for the outdoors and honeybees was her father’s gift to her — and now it's her gift to everyone she meets.
