DRIVEWAY: 'I Tell You Later' with Chelle Destefano

This performance is a continuation of Chelle’s introspection of her Deaf experience around having always been told “I tell you later” and “oh sorry I have forgotten now” making her feel excluded from gatherings, particularly in family get togethers, she being the only Deaf person in her family. Chelle created sculptures that point to those exclusionary surrounds where she had no idea what the conversation was about, so she would go off to read by herself. The darkness of her surroundings is a metaphor of silent worlds: quiet, sensory and absorbing the energies of those moving around her. The white balls with mouths are herself, as she felt like she was rolling around on the floor trying to find out what the conversations were about.

Chelle Destefano born in 1979 in Melbourne and residing in Victoria between Melbourne and Regional Victoria is a multidisciplinary artist. She enjoys questioning the world’s going ons in her own personal perspectives and sharing her experiences. Chelle creates by painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and textiles, and performance art. She has been a finalist in many art awards and been included in many group exhibitions and has had solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Adelaide and abroad in Europe. She is focusing on projects that fulfill her perspectives of issues and she is working on her next project about the housing crisis and family issues.

DRIVEWAY is a new performance program at KINGS Artist-Run of monthly public events such as performances, film screenings, poetry readings, and more, hosted in the KINGS driveway. In 2025 this initiative is supported by the City of Melbourne through the Annual Arts Grants Program.
