This course involves making a patchwork quilt with a finished size of around 64”x44” (155cm x 110cm).
On the first day, we will begin by making some of our "book blocks". You will then start to combine these small blocks to make four different types of larger block - upright books, stacked books, book ends and slanted books. The second day will involve building up your shelves and assembling your quilt top. We will add the "shelving" borders between the rows of books. We will also make a start on adding applique to your quilt.
Following the class, you will need to take your quilt away to add as much or as little applique as you want. You will also need to add the wadding, backing and bind your quilt. For this reason, although only basic techniques are required, this class is marked up as "intermediate".
Due to the nature of the design, everyone will leave with a completely different quilt. If there is anything you would like to bring with you to add to your quilt, please feel free to do so. It would also be helpful if you could bring along any selvedges you have, which can be added to the spines of your books as titles. Although we are able to provide some, we don't have enough for every attendee to have for every book.
MATERIALS
All materials for your quilt top are included in the cost of this class. This covers white-on-white background fabric. For your feature fabrics, it includes a full range of fabrics priced at £8.00 per metre. If you would like to use one of our lovely designer fabrics, an additional charge will be payable. Fabric to bind your quilt will also to be provided.
Wadding and backing fabric are not included , but will be available to purchase on the day, if required.
You will also need to bring a rotary cutter and 24” quilting ruler. If you would like us to source these, please let us know in plenty of time, so we can order them in for you. We do have A0 cutting mats you can use, or you are welcome to bring your own.
You are welcome to come into the shop before the class, if you would like to choose your fabrics and make a start on cutting out. Please do let us know if you are planning to do this, so that we can ensure that a cutting guide can be provided for your chosen quilt.
Tea, coffee, soft drinks and homemade cake are included.
Skill level: Intermediate
As for all of our sewing workshops, you must be able to use a sewing machine with a reasonable level of skill. On that basis, you should have either completed an “introduction to sewing machines” session, or have used a sewing machine yourself to undertake simple tasks like joining two pieces of fabric. If you have not done this, this course will not be suitable.
Although basic techniques will be used and full tuition will be given, there is quite a lot to get through in this class. You will need to layer up, quilt and bind your quilt after the class, so you will need to have the skills to do this independently.
You will also need to feel confident in cutting out accurately using a ruler and rotary cutter, although some support will be given with this.
