HISTORY

Wookey Hole’s blend of natural beauty, tragic folklore, and eerie experiences has made it a hotspot for ghost enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike. Whether you believe in the supernatural or not, it’s hard to deny the unsettling atmosphere that clings to the caves and corridors after dark.

Nestled in the Mendip Hills of Somerset, England, Wookey Hole is a site steeped in natural wonder and human history. Its striking limestone caves have been shaped over millennia by the River Axe, creating a subterranean network that has captivated visitors, scientists, and storytellers alike. But Wookey Hole is far more than a geological marvel—it is a place where myth, archaeology, and industry intertwine.

The caves at Wookey Hole have been occupied by humans for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests habitation as far back as the Palaeolithic period, with discoveries such as tools and bones pointing to early human activity. One of the most famous finds is the skeleton of a woman believed to be over a thousand years old, possibly the origin of the local legend of the Witch of Wookey Hole—a tale A woman who lived alone in the caves and was blamed for a local heartbreak. Branded a witch, she was turned to stone by a monk armed with holy water. To this day, a human-shaped stalagmite stands in the cave… said to be her petrified form

In medieval times, the site gained spiritual and industrial significance. The constant flow of the River Axe made Wookey Hole an ideal location for paper milling, an industry that flourished here from the 17th century. The old paper mill still stands and now forms part of the Wookey Hole Caves tourist attraction, preserving the memory of this once-thriving trade.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, Wookey Hole has developed into a popular tourist destination, offering cave tours, historic exhibits, and theatrical reenactments. Efforts to explore and preserve the deeper parts of the cave system have continued, with divers mapping underwater chambers that extend far beyond what is visible to casual visitors.

Today, Wookey Hole remains a place where natural history and human imagination meet—a living museum of Earth’s deep past and the stories we’ve told about it.

REPORTED ACTIVITY
The Witch’s Spirit. The most famous haunting is linked to the Witch of Wookey Hole. After being supposedly turned to stone by a monk’s exorcism, her spirit is believed to still linger in the caves. Visitors and staff have reported sudden chills and drops in temperature near her stalagmite. Disembodied whispers or crying echoing through the cavern. A shadowy figure of a woman seen lurking in the dark corners of the cave, vanishing when approached.
Ghosts of the Paper Mill. The old Victorian paper mill, now part of the attraction, is also said to be haunted. Staff members over the years have reported the sound of footsteps in empty rooms. Machinery operating on its own, despite being disconnected. Apparitions of former workers—sometimes glimpsed through windows or seen walking along upper corridors.
Poltergeist Activity, Some parts of the site are believed to be prone to poltergeist-like behavior, including objects being moved or thrown with no explanation. Lights flickering or going out suddenly. Doors slamming shut or unlocking on their own.
