Are you ready to discover what is lurking inside this 400 year old prison?
We have teamed up with The Haunted Exchange to bring you a night of fright in one of the UKs most haunted prisons!
During it’s early days Shepton Mallet was known for it’s rather primitive conditions, men, women and children were often housed together and not separated by the severity of their crimes. Due to the poor conditions of the jail and the very low wage being paid to the jailers (gaolers), there was known to be a serious lack of discipline throughout the prison by all who were there, staff and prisoners alike, so there was high amounts of promiscuous and drunken behaviour documented, this also added to the regular outbreaks of diseases throughout the prison.
Rather than using lengthy prison sentences as the punishment, fines, transportation, corporal and capital punishments were more commonly used. In fact, by the end of the 1700s, over 200 crimes were punishable by the death penalty. This was known as the Bloody Code.
After the abolition of public executions in 1868 and the closure of both Ilchester and Taunton gaols, Shepton Mallet Prison became the County Gaol (jail) and was then responsible for overseeing executions. Between 1889-1926, 7 men convicted of murder were executed within the prison. Their bodily remains were buried within the grounds of the prison, where they still remain there to this day.
At the start of WWII, the prison was turned into a British Military prison at one time between 1942-45, over 700 US servicemen were incarcerated here. 16 US servicemen were also hanged and a further 2 executed by firing squad during these years.
Some of Shepton Mallet’s most notorious inmates were Ronnie & Reggie Kray.
