About the event

On Further Thought: an art history lecture series - Ane Tonga
Don’t miss the third in our winter kōrero ‘On Further Thought: an art history lecture series’:

Declaration: Setting a New Pacific Agenda – Ane Tonga
6.00pm, Wednesday 30 July 2025
Aho Ruruku, Ngā Mokopuna, entry from Kelburn Parade
Free, all welcome, no booking required.

Ane Tonga writes, ‘Is there space to imagine Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Art Gallery as the epicentre for Pacific art in this region? This question has underpinned much of my curatorial thinking and practice in recent years, and I offer it as a provocation for both this lecture and our future art histories. In this lecture, I trace formative moments in contemporary Pacific art and performance – from the powerful blessing of Ioane Ioane’s ‘Fale Sā’ (1999) to the evocative resonance of Yuki Kihara’s ‘Milk and Honey’ (2003). These moments have lived on primarily through oral histories rather than formal exhibition records, yet they have offered both solace and inspiration as I continue to shape a curatorial vision that is unapologetically Pacific. This lecture considers how such exhibitions – often ephemeral in form but enduring in impact – invite us to rethink the role of major institutions in holding space for Indigenous and Pacific ways of knowing, making, and remembering.’

‘On Further Thought’ is a series of talks which address significant moments — published texts, exhibitions, art works — in local art history from the 1990s and early 2000s. The emphasis is on the act of re-reading, and on reflection itself as a productive form of research that helps us to navigate the present and energises our future art histories. We are particularly interested in research that acknowledges a changing of one’s mind, addresses misconceptions, and attends to the archive as a site of lively reclamation or transformation.
