Nau mai, haere mai, we are proud to present the Te Waka Huia Wellington Museum Legal Series, an informative lecture series about the purpose, historical significance and ongoing mahi of The Waitangi Tribunal held alongside the exhibition He Kura Toi Tangata: 50 Years of the Waitangi Tribunal, 1975-2025.
In order to understand our future, we must first understand our past. Therefore, we announce with great pleasure that noted historian Dame Claudia Orange DNZM OBE CRSNZ will present our opening lecture in this series, which focuses on the history of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Waitangi Tribunal.
Encouraging discussion on the Treaty of Waitangi is a vital part of continuing efforts to fulfil the promise of the 1840 agreement. Dame Claudia argues that a broad public understanding of the changes that have occurred in the Māori–Crown relationship is essential in order for those relationships to grow. She says that an understanding of history is vital, and informed vigilance is necessary.
Tickets are $35 per session, or $25 for students and SuperGold Card holders, and include one drink and light kai. Doors open 5:30pm. The exhibition He Kura Toi Tangata: 50 Years of The Waitangi Tribunal will remain open to view until 8pm.
