Dressed Up: a 19th century tea party

You may find Saturday 3 May at New Zealand Portrait Gallery a little different to usual. Drawing on the stories and time period of the characters in Gavin Hurley: Growing Up, Remnant Costumes & Co will transport us back to a bygone era. Bringing together the skills of four keen costumiers Remnant Costumes & Co invite you to join their tea party where you too can enjoy a cup of tea, admire their nineteenth century attire and discuss with them times past.

Remnant Costumes & Co will be in situ from 11.30am-1.30pm on Saturday 3 May at New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata.

Remnant Costumes (Dorothe Olsen) & Co. (Makini Calliste-Woollard, Maysie Pyatt, and Rhys Tunley) are a keen group of costumiers united by Toi Whakaari's Costume Construction course, as both graduates and current students. Their work has hit screens (If Looks Could K*ll) and stages all across Wellington, including PARK(ing) Day 2025 (Tea Party of Yester-Year), the St James Theatre (Tosca, La Traviata, Swan Lake, WICKED), Circa Theatre (Lizzie the Musical, Sleeping Beauty: the Pantomime) and Te Whaea (Costume Showcase 2023, 24). It brings them great joy to share their adoration for costuming with the greater public, via costuming productions or themselves.

Accessibility Information: The New Zealand Portrait Gallery is an accessible venue, all on one level. There is an accessible wharepaku at the back of the venue. The gallery has automatic sliding doors and glass doors that can be pushed or pulled to enter. We have a wheelchair available for use within the gallery, and there is low stool seating throughout.
