Assoc. Prof. Michael Norris discusses ‘The Spaces In Between’, a recent piano trio, commissioned by the Asian Composers League for their 2025 festival in Kawasaki, Japan. The work interrogates the idea of ‘interstitality’ (betweenness) and ‘deformation’ (the bending and flux of seemingly fixed objects), drawing on concepts such as the juxtaposition of just intonation and equal temperament, the subversion of listening frames, and the creation of 'unstable', ‘subsiding’ harmonic terrain. The underlying metaphor of environmental flux and mutability — which as one reaches middle age, and as one experiences more frequent and devastating environmental events, becomes increasingly tangible — also underpins the compositional perspective of this work.
