Join Maine Fiber Artist Mary DeLano to explore an adaptation of Kawandi – a quilting technique developed by the Siddi people of Western India. This technique combines piecing and quilting into one step. Fabric patches are quilted to a backing, from the edge of the quilt to its center, using large running stitches. Design decisions are made as each patch is added to the quilt. Every quilt is unique, bearing evidence of the quilter’s “hand” and design aesthetic in its composition.
This class is suited for stitchers of all levels. Kawandi is an organic technique that does not require precision stitching.
If you have taken Shibori or eco printing classes with Mary before, this is a wonderful opportunity to take the fabric you created and turn it into a finished project. Mary routinely uses eco printed and Shibori dyed fabric pieces in her creations. Mary will reach out to each student before class to determine what she needs to bring them for class. Students can purchase backing, batting, and/or eco printed and Shibori dyed scraps for their project.
Students need to bring fabric scissors to class. Please bring a sack lunch along as well, we will break in the afternoon.
