August Monthly Meeting - Dust Bowl

Join us in-person (or online via Google Meet) for our August chapter meeting followed by speaker Dan Northcut, environmental science teacher and Texas Master Naturalist.

A Look at the Dust Bowl from a Geological and Ecological Perspective.
Dan will look at the changing conditions of the Great Plains since the end of the last ice age culminating in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The effects of ecological succession over the last 12,000 years produced what we call the tall and short grass prairies. These ecosystems began to face man-made modifications over the past few centuries, the most extreme of which, coupled with historical drought, produced the historic tragedy known as the Dust Bowl. With an emphasis on the Texan parts of the story, he will explore the series of decisions that led to the loss of most of the topsoil over one hundred million acres and one of the largest internal migrations in U.S. history.
