Intro to Shibori with Indigo Dyeing

Shibori is a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique known for its deep blue patterns created with indigo. In this hands-on class, you’ll explore various folding, binding, and clamping methods to produce intricate designs on fabric, along with essential fabric preparation techniques.

Class will cover how to set up and use a synthetic indigo dye vat, as well as how to achieve similar results with fiber-reactive dyes. Participants will take their project home to continue batching and rinse them once the desired depth of color is reached.

Your class fee includes all materials, including three large tea towels for practice and a 2-gallon bucket with a lid to take your indigo vat home for additional dyeing. You may also bring 1-2 small cotton items, such as a shirt or pillowcase, or a few smaller pieces like cloth napkins or diapers.
