Wisconsin and the Watery World of Beavers
Beavers are ecosystem engineers who are producers of biodiversity, mitigators of floods, and preventers of fires, and are often entangled in conservation tactics. Using personal anecdotes, interviews, and folklore, this presentation will briefly highlight the cultural and natural history of the beaver, discuss some of the mythology of the critter in the Great Lakes area, and explain the ecological impact and importance of the animal in Wisconsin.
Nicholas Miller did his doctoral research in Milwaukee on the return of beaver and sturgeon and has a PhD in “Multispecies History and Anthropology” from the UW – Milwaukee. He is currently a Teaching Professor of History and Anthropology at Ball State University. His research combines public history, environmental anthropology, and folkloristics. He has worked with the National Park Service, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and in multiple museums, archives, and universities.
