This October, step behind the scenes at the Center for Great Apes and discover how our orangutans and chimpanzees play an active role in their own healthcare.
During this Ape-ology: In the Field session, you’ll learn how our dedicated caregivers and veterinary team use positive reinforcement training to encourage apes to voluntarily participate in routine health checks. From opening their mouths for a tooth inspection to presenting an arm for a mock injection, these trained behaviors allow the apes to receive necessary care with less stress, on their terms, and always rewarded with their favorite treats!
Participants will have the opportunity to:
🩺 Observe healthcare training sessions with both chimpanzees and orangutans
🩺 Hear directly from caregivers about the techniques and trust-building involved
🩺 See how training strengthens bonds while supporting the well-being of each individual ape
This session highlights how compassion, patience, and cooperation make it possible for the sanctuary to provide the best possible care for our residents.
Don’t miss this exclusive chance to witness firsthand the incredible partnership between the apes and their caregivers.
