2025 Tug Talks Schedule
Tug Talks will take place at the Visitor’s Center on Peebles Island this year. Enjoy a short stroll over the scenic bridge, or take the available shuttle for folks who need a lift.
Saturday 9/6
11 AM - The Thomas X. Grasso, 2025 Tug of the Year
Amy Hansen from the New York State Canal Corporation will join representatives from Bount Boats, Inc. will discuss the design and construction of the Canal Corporation's newest maintenance tugboat.
2 PM - A Nontraditional Trip on the Canal
Waterford historian Russ VanDervoort tells the tale of a July 1910 "mule era" trip on the Champlain Canal from the Waterford weighlock to Whitehall & the Lachute River using at least three (and maybe more) tugboats, some horses, a train, and a jackass or two...what could go wrong?
3:30 PM - Ideas Borrowed, Adapted, or Rejected: Designing NY's Canal Structures
Noted Canal historian Duncan Hay presents on the movable dams on the current Barge Canal and how the idea was borrowed from a far away land to make the new canal possible.

11 AM - How it Started, How it's Going: 200 Years of the Erie Canal
Tugboat Roundup founder Capt. John Callaghan discusses the political and engineering history of how the Erie Canal came to be, and how the Canal continues to play an important economic and recreational role today.
