About the event

2025-26 Information and Registration Kickoff Meeting!

This meeting is for both new and returning riders and will, tentatively, be at Excelsior (the next driveway above Washougal High School).
You will have a chance to meet the coaches and your teammates and ask any questions you may have. We will have informative packets for each of you to take home and keep for reference as well as paperwork to be completed and handed in to the advisors before leaving the meeting. At least one parent/guardian must accompany their student to this meeting.

We can’t wait to see everyone!

Below is some general info:

Washougal High School Equestrian Team is part of District 6 in the Washington High School Equestrian Team (WAHSET) program. We not only accept members from Washougal High School, but also Stevenson, Excelsior, surrounding schools currently unaffiliated with an existing team, running start, and homeschool.

WAHSET is considered a “Club Sport” at Washougal High School. Therefore we are solely responsible for our own funding and operations. Our team abides by the same Athletic Code of Conduct that is enforced for any sport at WHS, including grade checks.

Our season mostly follows the school year, with registration Thursday, October 2nd at 7:00PM. Practices typically start first full week of October and competitions start in February.

WAHSET covers a wide range of events to encourage riders from nearly every discipline:
-Cattle events (daubing and roping)
-Gaming (barrel racing, pole bending, Figure 8, Keyhole, Individual Flags)
-Performance (Showmanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Stock Seat Equitation, Trail Equitation, In-hand Trail, Hunt Seat Over Fences, Reining, Dressage, Driving, Saddleseat *all individual patterns rather than rail classes*)
-Team Events (Two Man Cow Sorting, Working Pairs, In-Hand Obstacle Relay, Two Man BiRangle, Canadian Flags, Working Fours, Drill Team, Versatility)

At each meet riders compete in up to five individual events and as many team events as they desire. The number of different disciplines riders choose to participate in will determine how much of a time commitment they will have. There will be separate weekly and/or biweekly practices for drill, gaming, and performance. We will be determining practice schedules before the meeting and taking in consideration for conflicts. The practice requirements are very attainable in order to be able to ride at the meets and we are happy to work with you!

Please note that all coaches are volunteers and should be respected for the commitment they have made to both human and equine athletes. Understand, this is a nonnegotiable.

As with any high school sport, there is a cost involved. Registration fee is paid out of pocket in the fall and is $250. Everything else we try, both individually and as a team, to raise the funds for through sponsorships and/or fundraising. These additional costs include, but are not limited to: meet costs (stalls, camping/hotel, commuting), practice arena fees, other discipline related costs (sorting/roping/daubing is $10-$35 per practice). Again, we do everything we can, as a team, to lessen the out of pocket cost to our riders and their families.

Not everyone on the team owns their own horse, however, having access to a horse and being able to provide your own transportation is required for competing athletes. We will do what we can to help, but there are absolutely no guarantees.
In addition to competing athletes, there is also the option of being a “non-competing member” or a “groom”. Non-competing is a reduced fee, you are able to attend all practices, team activities, attend and help at meets, however you would NOT bring your horse to compete at the meets. A groom usually does not have a horse and wants to be around to help, assist, and learn with the team (think Team Manager).

The WAHSET.org website is a valuable resource to find events that are available, rules, records, and contact information for schools and districts. Our team has this public Facebook page as well as a closed communications group for active team members, parents, and coaches.

WAHSET puts “TEAM” into the equestrain world. You will be investing in something bigger than you as an individual. More specifically, Washougal High School Equestrian Team has a strong history of great sportsmanship, horsemanship and team spirit! This team truly becomes a family and you will be hard pressed to find a stronger support system elsewhere. It's an amazing thing to be a part of.

If you have any questions please message our facebook page or contact one of our advisors and/or coaches.
