Experience Ilê Aiyê live in DC! Celebrate Afro-Brazilian music, dance, and culture with EducArte on September 5 at UDC Theater of the Arts.

About this Event

🇺🇸

Join local Brazilian arts nonprofit EducArte for a historic evening with Ilê Aiyê, the legendary Afro-bloco that redefined Brazil’s cultural landscape and was instrumental in promoting Black consciousness in Brazil. On September 5, Ilê Aiyê brings its powerful samba-afro rhythms, dynamic Afro-Brazilian dance, and a message of pride and resistance to Washington, DC, at the UDC Theater of the Arts.

Ilê Aiyê was founded in 1974 by a group of young people in the Liberdade neighborhood of Salvador, Bahia, inspired by the US Black Power movement and African liberation struggles. They were determined to celebrate their African heritage during Salvador’s Carnival—a festival that, despite the city’s Black majority, had become dominated by white participants. From its origins in a Candomblé house, Ilê Aiyê became the first Afro bloco in Salvador, creating a space where Black Brazilians could express their identity, reclaim their roots, and challenge social exclusion. Their music is driven by powerful percussion; their lyrics honor African and Afro-Brazilian history; and their performances are a vibrant display of tradition and innovation.

The group’s influence extends far beyond carnival parades. Ilê Aiyê inspired a wave of Afro blocos across Brazil and has become a symbol of Black empowerment and cultural affirmation. Their annual Beleza Negra (Black Beauty) pageant celebrates Black women as goddesses, countering mainstream beauty standards and affirming the beauty and strength of Black identity. As the New York Times noted, Ilê Aiyê maintains both its musical and racial roots, creating a unique sound that is deeply rooted in African and Afro-Brazilian traditions while addressing contemporary issues of race and justice.

This concert is a rare opportunity for the Greater Washington, DC community to connect with the history, music, and axé of Ilê Aiyê. Experience the rhythms that have inspired generations, the dance that tells stories of struggle and triumph, and the message of unity that resonates across borders. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unforgettable celebration of transatlantic Black culture and heritage.

🇧🇷
