International development and humanitarian aid. It’s a line of work that’s fueled by human empathy for those less fortunate, and one that makes the entire planet safer, stronger, and more prosperous. It’s how the U.S. shows up for the world—not with tanks, but with textbooks, vaccines, and a weird obsession with acronyms. But then came the fascist coup, which treated USAID like it was the first piñata at a dictator’s birthday party, and has left everyone who worked there feeling like they’re in the middle of a continuous rug pull. Now the agency’s in shambles, and the world is feeling it.
Grassroots Comedy has seen enough, which is why we’re producing the Comedy Show for USAID Solidarity! Produced by a team of real non-robot, non-fascist people with a love of laughter and a strong sense of basic human empathy, this show is a chance to unpack the wonder of abrupt life and political change through the levity of laughter, while supporting those who have been hit the hardest by current events.
Featuring a lineup of very funny humans with connections to USAID, international development and humanitarian aid, and related fields, enjoy jokes from some of the Mid-Atlantic’s finest and funniest comedians. Laughs will be at the expense of the broken system and the day to day snafus of working in fields where you are treading water.
Proceeds will go to the USAID Solidarity Fund, which provides one-time direct cash grants to the most vulnerable households within our USAID community. They support people based on need, while balancing reach, adequacy, and a respectful application process. The Solidarity Fund is run by former USAID staff with significant experience in emergency cash programming, as a component fund of our partner the Greater Washington Community Foundation.
So grab a friend or five and help us support and celebrate the unsung champions of global development and aid with laughter. Because even if it’s become harder to build a better world, we can at least roast the ones trying to ruin it.
