About this Event

A SACRED RELATIONSHIP: Fathers and Daughters

A Conversation between Authors Jonetta Rose Barras and David Miller Ph.D. with special guidance for familial self-care and restoration provided by Tracie Robinson Ph.D and testimony from Amuchechukwu Nwafor

Most people acknowledge the important role fathers play in the lives of their sons. However, little attention is given to the critical and long-lasting contribution of fathers to ensuring their daughters experience whole, healthy lives marked by strong relationships and productive, prosperous careers.

Fathers don’t just provide the template for their daughters’ relationship with boys and men, they act as chauffeurs guiding their daughters as they enter society— a society that, despite numerous changes, continues to be male dominated. Fathers also are translators, acting sometimes, as living dictionaries to help their daughters grasp the Mars-like lexicon of men. There are myriad roles fathers perform for their daughters to which many give short shrift but experts have declared invaluable.

When fathers go missing in a woman’s or girl’s life, bad things often happen. In her book, Whatever Happened to Daddy’s Little Girl? The Impact of Fatherlessness on Black Women, jonetta rose barras documents the devastating effects of father absence. She was the first person to codify The Fatherless Woman Syndrome.

To prevent such devastation for girls and women, it is critical to acknowledge that fathers matter to daughters and to understand why and how they matter.

Esther Productions Inc., in partnership with the Black Student Fund, Essences of Wellness Authentic Transformation llc. and the Tenley-Friendship Public Library are presenting this event .

The program will include a mini workshop presented by Dr. Tracie Robinson focused on familial and personal self-care and restoration for fathers and daughters. Testimony from author Amuchechukwu Nwafor. and fatherhood experts jonetta rose barras and Dr. David Miller be “In Conversation” about the dynamics of the father-daughter relationship based on their decades of work in the field.

At a time when things seem to be falling apart, family is still society’s most important institution.
