Using previously unpublished photographs from personal collections, plus stories and poems penned whilst doing their National Service, intimately depicting the ups and downs of their daily lives, Helen Frost’s new book immerses readers in the quirky and unusual world of the Great War Land Girl here in Warwickshire to discover how they interacted, lived, socialised, relaxed, fell in love, went off the rails … and got through difficult times.

The minutiae of life as a recruit in land organisations is vividly brought to life through the hitherto untold accounts that feature in both this illustrated talk and Helen’s book.

Ultimately, the story of these women is one of unwavering devotion to duty and to the country they held dear: their forgotten testimonies fizz off the page as a true record of ‘I was there’.
