🔸 Sophie Zelmani
In the spring of 2025 (11.04.2025) Sophie Zelmani will release a new album and tour with her band. Musically she continue to travel in the same timeless room as great artists as Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Always keeping a high level in her writing as in the consistency of her musical expression. The intimacy and characteristic voice can’t be mistaken for anyone else.
Sophie Zelmani's new album "Lake Geneva" contains ten new, atmospheric songs. As usual, her songs and sensual voice are framed by the congenial arrangements of producer / guitarist, Lars Halapi. Zelmani herself makes no secret of the fact that the album was preceded by a period of writer’s block: "I felt empty, like I had nothing to say," she admits. "I went to Lars' studio as often as I could, to find my own bubble to create in, and it felt very frustrating of course when I had nothing to show for it. Fortunately, he was very understanding. He never put any pressure on me, and in the end we had an album," she says, sounding almost surprised herself.
As usual, Zelmani is modest. Where some of her albums have required a number of listens for the individual songs' character to crystallize, the material on "Lake Geneva" feels unusually direct. Ten distinct songs, each with a clearly defined identity that has also been strengthened by the arrangements, and the fact that Halapi plays an unusually large number of guitar solos. “I love Lars’ playing, and encouraged him to play more electric guitar this time", confirms Zelmani. “His playing is an extension of his personality. After 14 albums together I really feel that his guitar playing and my voice belong together. ”Another thing that probably fueled Zelmani’s inspiration was her participation in the popular Swedish TV series “Så mycket bättre”, where different artists interpreted each other’s songs and Estraden’s version of her song “The World Ain’t Pretty” became that season’s biggest radio hit from the show.
“Sophie lives quite isolated and tends to meet very few artists or craftsmen in her everyday life, so I think it was a positive experience for her songs and herself to get affirmation by colleagues,” says Halapi. The title track “Lake Geneva” sets the vibe for the album. It was inspired by the sculpture “Melancholy”, which can be found by Lake Geneva. Halapi points out that the song’s reference to old Europe ties in well with today’s situation and that it also captures a black and white sensation of rocks and sea.
