Izabela Wowczko interrogates gendered power through material, symbolic, and political textures, and their relation to the body. By study and profession, a former economist, Wowczko brings to her artistic work a deep understanding of structural systems—economic, social, and ideological—and how they are played-out on the skins of our bodies. Working primarily with liquid latex, her works become not just representations of or stand-ins for the body, but visceral sites of engagement in and of themselves: porous skins through which power is negotiated and performed, tactically and psychologically. They are acts of dissent against patriarchal perspective, a rebellion against appropriation, imposition, and domination.
Across her works, the recurring motif of skin—as surface, barrier, and contact zone—emerges as both metaphor and site of where the self ends and the world begins; it is a site of vulnerability and resistance, intimacy and introspection. For Wowczko, it is also a conceptual tool that destabilizes binaries between subject and object, domination and submission.
This exhibition is the second of two that are the result of an open call addressed to students of Academies of Fine Arts across Poland.

Izabela Wowczko bada władzę wpisaną w płeć poprzez materialne, symboliczne i polityczne tekstury oraz ich relacje z ciałem. Z wykształcenia i zawodu ekonomistka, wnosi do swojej twórczości głęboką świadomość systemów strukturalnych – ekonomicznych, społecznych i ideologicznych – oraz tego, jak odciskają się one na powierzchni ludzkiego ciała. Pracując przede wszystkim z ciekłym lateksem, tworzy obiekty, które nie są jedynie przedstawieniami czy substytutami ciała, lecz samodzielnymi, intensywnymi miejscami spotkania – porowatymi skórami, przez które władza przenika, jest negocjowana i odgrywana, taktycznie i psychologicznie zarazem. Jej realizacje to akty sprzeciwu wobec patriarchalnej optyki, bunt przeciwko zawłaszczeniu, narzucaniu i dominacji.
W jej pracach skóra powraca jako motyw przewodni – powierzchnia, bariera i strefa kontaktu – metafora i granica, w której „ja” spotyka się ze światem; przestrzeń kruchości i oporu, intymności i autorefleksji. Dla Wowczko to także narzędzie konceptualne, które podważa sztywne podziały między podmiotem a przedmiotem, dominacją a uległością.
Ta wystawa to jedna z dwóch wystaw zrealizowanych w ramach open calla skierowanego do studentek i studentów Akademii Sztuk Pięknych z całej Polski.
