Join WordPlay on Thursday, October 23, at 6PM as Mike (M.L.) Mallow discusses his new book, A Ghost Chases the Horizon, an Appalachian gothic thriller set in and around the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia. A native of Pendleton County, West Virginia now living in Minnesota, Mike is traveling “back home” for this event. Three years ago Mike visited WordPlay to discuss Burning Without Knowing, the second book in his Light Up the Holler series, and we’re excited to host him again. At the October 23 event, Mike will be in conversation with Jean Flanagan, his friend and former colleague at the Moorefield Examiner.
A Ghost Chases the Horizon explores the relationship between time and spirit through intertwining stories in and around the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, a hospital known by many names during its long and often troubled history. Spanning four eras, the story begins in 1999 when an urban spelunker has a paranormal encounter in the shuttered facility and then weaves in long-buried tales of a fascinating cast of characters: a widow falsely committed to the hospital who gives birth in 1905 to a child sired by her doctor, a ne'er-do-well farmer who self-commits in 1935 with delusions of orders from the U.S. President, and an adrift divorcee conducting research at the hospital in 2019 for a friend’s true-crime manuscript.
Currently the editor of the Grant County Herald in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, Mike Mallow is an award-winning newspaper producer, photographer, and writer. He is a member of West Virginia Writers, Inc. and the Society for News Design. Mike’s novel, In the Country Dark, was named the Appalachian Book of the Year by the Appodlachia podcast in 2020, and his novels have been featured in The Charleston-Gazette Mail, Herald-Dispatch, and Kirkus Reviews magazine.
The October 23 author talk and signing will be held at WordPlay, 50 West Main Street, in Wardensville. Event is free; no registration required. Mike’s new book and previous titles will be available for purchase at WordPlay, and A Ghost Chases the Horizon can also be purchased online through Bookshop.org. For more information, email
