Don’t be fooled by the short distance, this 8.5km trek is one of the toughest day hikes within a short driving distance of Melbourne. You can expect lush forest but be sure to have a look through the canopy on the way up, as there aren’t any views to speak of at the top.

The trail climbs steeply through dense forest, past towering Mountain Ash and tangled ferns, with lyrebird song echoing through the trees. Keep your eyes peeled and voices low — you might spot one of these elusive birds darting through the undergrowth.

The 9km return hike is a leg-burner, with leaves, branches and fallen logs to navigate. At the summit, a mossy 3.6-metre cairn offers the perfect spot for a well-earned lunch break before the descent.
