Antibiotic resistance is regarded as one of the existential threats to mankind, with several million deaths each year from untreatable bacterial infections. So, treatment of bacterial diseases is now being explored with a new approach using the viruses of bacteria, called bacteriophages or phages, which can K*ll bacteria and also modulate the expression of bacterial genes. Can we use these to reduce the effects of antibiotic resistance?
Professor Paul Barrow has studied bacterial diseases and new approaches to addressing them for more than 50 years. Now retired, he was Professor of Infectious Diseases and Research Director at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science at the University of Nottingham from 2006 to 2020.
