Through a program sponsored by Governor Kathy Hochul, Western Catskills Indivisible (WCI) has arranged to host an emergency readiness training session to help residents in Delaware County be better prepared for extreme weather events and other disasters.
The NY Citizen Preparedness Training is a standard curriculum presented by the NY National Guard, a project of the NY State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. Its purpose is to reduce harm to communities when disasters strike by equipping residents with the tools and resources they need to be better prepared, respond quickly and safely, and recover as rapidly as possible. Topics will include how to develop a family emergency plan and stock up on emergency supplies. Each household that attends will receive one preparedness kit.
With severe weather events becoming more frequent and more extreme, it is more important than ever that New Yorkers be prepared. The event is being held in Walton, which was the site of major flooding in June of 2006. Margaretville and other towns in the Western Catskills area also suffered major floods during Hurricane Irene in August of 2011. Members of these areas are especially encouraged to attend. According to the NY State Dept of Environmental Conservation, “Intensifying climate change hazards such as warming temperatures, increasing precipitation, extreme weather events, and rising sea levels are impacting communities and ecosystems across New York State. Climate change impacts will continue to worsen as global temperatures and greenhouse gas emissions increase.”
