In 1975, Kalapana released their landmark, self-titled debut album to critical and popular acclaim, launching their career within the pivotal decades of the Contemporary Hawaiian Renaissance. Their songs, written by local musicians for a local audience, would define both Hawaiian and Hawaiian-influenced soundtracks across several generations with their heartfelt lyrics, stunning musicianship and vocal dexterity.
To this day, Kalapana is part of playlists throughout the world – from North and South America to Asia to Europe and beyond. In 2011, the group was honored with a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts.
On October 4, 2025, Kalapana will present a very special concert at the Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell in celebration of their 50th anniversary. Tickets go on sale this Saturday at Blaisdell box office and ticketmaster.com.
The songs that planted them firmly in Hawaiian music history will feature Kalapana joined by both old friends and contemporary fans such as Henry Kapono, Summer, and Jorden Kealoha-Yamanaka (formerly of Crossing Rain). Expect more special guests to be announced soon!
Exile Atsushi, who has recorded with and performed with Kalapana in his native Japan, is also on the bill.
Founding member Kirk Thompson will also appear, and Hawai’i’s most popular DJ of the era, Kamasami Kong, will be a part of the show.
Reserved seats are priced at $150, $75, and $55, while general admission lawn tickets are priced at $35 – with keiki 12 and under free (up to 4 keiki per couple). A very limited number of VIP seats are available for $225 each, which includes a meet and greet and merchandise package.
A $1.00 donation benefitting the Henry Kapono Foundation will be added to purchased tickets.
