SUPER LAST MINUTE but after a year off The Little Pour on the Prairie returns this August 9th at my home studio in rural SD.
There will be a public sand mold and ceramic shell workshop in the Sculpture Studio (rm. 171 in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts) at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD from Aug. 6th to Aug. 8th from 9AM - 10PM or so. Buy your own silica sand available locally from the Lumber Yard building center in Vermillion. Bring sand if you plan on making a sand mold. We use sodium silicate bonded sand, this means that patterns must not be moist or made from water clay as water breaks down sodium silica bonded molds. There will be a $12 material fee for every 0-100Lb. of sand mixed (for facilities and chemicals). Ceramic shells must be completed and ready to burn out by 8pm Friday Aug. 8th, burn outs will begin as soon as Wed. There will be a $30 material fee every 1Lb. of shell produced at USD (for facilities and materials). Participants are welcome to bring prepared sand molds and ceramic shells to the pour. There will be a $10 fee to burn out unfired shells. There is a metal fee of $0.50 per pound of iron cast used unless you've brought your own metal for your molds. There will also be scratch tiles available for carving by you and cast by the crew! Small tiles for $15 and large tiles for $25. Come help break iron (EVERYONE MUST HELP BREAK IRON or bring your own) Aug. 6-8 at the USD sculpture studio. Everything will need to be transported out to Chris Meyer's farm at 30635 456th Ave. Volin, SD 57072. More trucks/trailers are very welcome.
On Saturday August 9th, we will start up the furnace(s) in the afternoon. Everyone should be out to the farm by 1pm, (3pm at the latest). Bring personal protective gear, there will be some protective equipment available if you would like to participate in the actual pouring but you must wear appropriate clothing and footwear underneath (natural fibers and leather boots-steel toed preferred). If you don't want to pour come and hang out and enjoy the spectacle!
Participants are also able to camp at Chris' farm for a small fee ($10/night or if you bring a 5 gal bucket(s) for charging - 1 bucket = $5 off of camping). Bring a tent, camp chairs, your own beverages, snacks and food (there will be grills and a griddle to cook on) also safety gear if you've got it. As per tradition, we will have an "Iron Pour PotLuck" following the pour. I will smoke a brisket to share but we will need sides and deserts and such! There will be a bonfire and plenty of good company and the beautiful Missouri River or Lewis and Clark Reservoir not far away to swim, float or fish. In August the river is warm and refreshing so bring your swim suit or your boats!

This may be the last Little Pour on the Prairie in the country. I hope you can make it. The Little Pour on the Prairie will remain a biannual event. I hope to establish a national juried exhibition and invited artist associated with the Little Pour moving forward. To all of you who've been here for the pour, Thank You! I hope you had fun and made some cool stuff!
