The TRS Kids Performing Arts Mural Project is an exciting Art project aimed at fostering artistic expression while celebrating the vibrant community of Virginia Beach. This project will provided selected students with a unique opportunity to collaborate with a professional artist, Richard Press, Cousin Jerald to design and create a mural that reflects the rich culture, diversity, and spirit of Virginia Beach.
Project Overview
This initiative consists of two key components:
Mural Workshop Series – A structured, three-session workshop in July and August, where students will learn the fundamentals of mural painting.
Mural Creation & Community Engagement– A hands-on painting experience in August, followed by a grand unveiling event featuring performances and local resource opportunities.
Mural Workshop Series
Led by professional muralist Richard Press, Cousin Jerald and Cynthia Thomas, the three-session workshop will provide ten selected student artists with essential mural techniques, including:
Measuring and scaling artwork for large surfaces
Understanding dimensions and composition
Proper paint selection and quantity calculations
Brushwork and spray techniques
Collaboration and teamwork in public art
The workshops will be held in two sessions in July and one session in early August, ensuring students are well-prepared before beginning the painting phase.
Mural Creation & Student Engagement 2 day event schedule
August 15, 2025, Friday 8am to 1pm
August 16 2025, Saturday 8am-11am
Once students have completed the training, they will embark on a two-day paint weekend @17thstreetautomotive under the guidance of Richard Press, Cousin Jerald and Cynthia Thomas. This hands-on experience will allow them to bring their vision to life while refining their mural skills in a real-world setting. The process will be structured to avoid overwhelming students while maintaining high-quality artistry.
Community Mural Reveal & Celebration Event
August 17, 2025 2pm to 5pm with the "REVEAL" @ 4pm
This will be unveiled in a community-wide celebration in front of the completed artwork. This culminating event will feature:
