Juneteenth is a national holiday that celebrates and reflects upon the rich history and culture of African Americans. It commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, making it a significant milestone in our nation's journey toward equality. While the actual federal holiday is June 19, Virginia Beach is celebrating Juneteenth from June 18th to the 22nd with "Juneteenth at the Beach" at VB's Oceanfront 24th Street Stage. Juneteenth at the Beach will feature events for the entire community, from parades and concerts to educational workshops and art exhibitions. Virginia Beach is partnering with local organizations, businesses and artists to create a memorable experience that will entertain and educate residents and visitors about the significance of Juneteenth.
Highlights will include a historical reenactment that takes participants back in time to experience the struggles and triumphs of those who fought for freedom. There will also be live performances showcasing African American culture, including music, dance, and spoken word.
By acknowledging and honoring Juneteenth, we recognize the struggles and resilience of those who came before us and reaffirm our commitment to justice and freedom for all. Juneteenth is also a time to educate ourselves about the past, work toward a future where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and to come together as a community.
