Sky Blue and Green

The works presented in the exhibition are video-sculptures, consisting in aerial footage
taken by flying over some places on the Adriatic coast. The subject of first video is the
circular bases of the cooling towers of the SAROM refinery in Ravenna (IT). Four towers
were built in 1950 and desitinated to become a symbol of an era, especially made famous
in the setting of Antonioni’s movie "Red Desert." During April 2024, the owning
company demolished them, making the large structures disappear within a few days. The
aerial shot of the site was made using a smartphone attached to a kite flying from a
parking lot in front of the area, a playful and precarious tool allowed filming a place that
is inaccessible and monitored. Meanwhile, a second video shows a tourist beach out of
season, people are passing by marking the sand and suddenly the fall of the camera
projects the viewer into a bush.
The kite is an object that evokes time and childhood, it swings and it’s moved by the
force of atmospheric agents, there is a poetic bond established between the kite and the
user, namely the string. The works arises as an attempt to project eyes beyond a
boundary: a desire that has always been at the center of human will, leading to the dream
of flight and to development of current satellite devices and drones. The places where I
filmed, namely Ravenna area, are characterized by a present suspended in abandonment
and a past of great splendor, when petrochemical economy flourished and brought
progress in the land, and tourism was its best symptom. The videos highlight the fragility
of human development, which, no matter how enhanced by the most efficient
technological devices, is driven and hung by the thread of dreams.
