Belarus research network expert discussion “Security Threats of Lukashenka’s Regime: What Can Be Done?”

By supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine and increasing its dependence on the Kremlin, particularly in foreign policy and military affairs, Lukashenka’s regime has created a range of security threats for the region and its neighbouring states. These threats include both direct military risks and broader challenges related to political stability, economic resilience, and information security.

This discussion will bring together field experts Ryhor Nizhnikau (Finnish Institute of International Affairs), Aliaksei Kazharski (Charles University), Dovilė Jakniūnaitė (Vilnius University), and Yuliya Kazdobina (Ukraine Prism) to explore the key challenges posed by the Belarusian authoritarian regime and consider possible measures to mitigate the risks and enhance regional security. The discussion will be moderated by Beate Livdanska (Rīga Stradiņš University, Latvian Institute of International Affairs).

The event will take place on 11 September at 16:40 (EEST) at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University (IIRPS VU), room 402. It will also be broadcasted live on the IIRPS VU Facebook page. The event will take place during the international conference “Belarus and Belarusians in the time of geopolitical insecurities: global perceptions and domestic realities” hosted by the IIRPS VU.
