About Moon Over Buffalo
Set in 1953 at the Erlanger Theatre in Buffalo, New York, this fast-paced farce follows George and Charlotte Hay, a once-famous acting duo now teetering on the edge of obscurity.
Their repertory company is performing Private Lives and Cyrano de Bergerac—badly—when they hear that legendary director Frank Capra might attend their matinee to scout talent for his next film. It’s their last shot at stardom… if they can keep their crumbling marriage, chaotic cast, and confused identities from turning the performance into a total disaster.
With mistaken identities, missed cues, and a deaf grandmother who hates George, Moon Over Buffalo is a madcap love letter to live theatre—where anything can go wrong, and usually does.
Note to actors - this is a farce! Characters are broadly played and a lot of fun will be had by all.
Characters in Moon Over Buffalo
George Hay - A fading stage actor. Full of bravado and theatrical flair. Prone to over-the-top antics and physical comedy. Think slapstick meets Shakespeare. Age - 40's-50's.
Charlotte Hay - George’s wife and fellow actor, equally dramatic but more grounded. She dreams of Hollywood stardom and is fed up with George’s antics—especially his affair. Age - 40's - 50's.
Rosalind (Roz) - Their daughter, who left the stage for a “normal” life. Smart, practical, and caught between her past and present. Formerly engaged to Paul, now with Howard. Age - 20's.
Paul - The stage manager and Roz’s ex-fiancé. Loyal to the Hays’ chaotic troupe and still harboring feelings for Roz. The calm in the storm—mostly. Age- 20's-30's
Howard - Roz’s current fiancé, a nervous TV weatherman. Mistaken for everything from a tax auditor to an actor—he’s the ultimate fish out of water. Age - 20's-30's.
Ethel - Charlotte’s hard-of-hearing mother. Grumpy, sharp-tongued, and the source of many comic misunderstandings. Think “deaf but deadly.” Age - 60's and up
Richard - A love-struck lawyer pursuing Charlotte. Suave, persistent, and completely oblivious to the theatrical madness around him. Age - 40's-and up
Eileen - A young actress in the troupe—and George’s one-night stand. Sweet but naïve, her pregnancy news sets the plot spinning. Age - 20's
Auditions are open to all. Newcomers are welcome - no experience necessary! Come dressed comfortably, and be prepared to move.
Please know your possible rehearsal conflicts. Rehearsals will be organized in "french scenes" - meaning if you are called to rehearsal you will be rehearsing, not waiting around. Actors are expected to be at every technical rehearsal and at every performance. No exceptions. Rehearsals are at night. We try to accomodate special needs, BUT the show must go on. The closer we get to performance, missed rehearsals cannot happen.
