About the event

Indigo Dye Workshop using Shibiro Dye Techniques
This three hour workshop will introduce you to the history of Indigo dye and some traditional Japanese Dye techniques. You will also be encouraged to find other materials to use as resists rather than just traditional ones and to invent your own folding and wrapping patterns. A piece of fabric will be used to make ties and scarves to learn techniques with and try pattern making. Or one length of fabric divided into smaller test pieces.

The dye will be mixed in class and techniques for dipping and hanging to dry will be demonstrated. As well as some of the many ways fabric can be treated to create your own designs.

You will need to bring a piece of cloth: cotton, rayon/viscose or linen. Suggested at least 1/2 metre, for trying different folding and dye resisting techniques. Fabric may be lightweight for clothing, medium weight for pillow covers or canvas weight fabric for bags and backpacks. You may also bring a small garment such as a t-shirt of all natural fibre.

Rayon fabric may be purchased from the instructor for $11 per half meter minimum.

You are encouraged to also bring flat objects in pairs or multiples of pairs to act as a resist. For example: bottle lids (metal or plastic), stir sticks, popsicle sticks or tongue depressors, any piece of hard plastic or wood… look around your place and see what might be there. Bring some plastic gloves or kitchen washing gloves that you will only reuse for dying fabric.

Please indicate before the workshop if you want to buy rayon fabric from our instructor or if you will be bringing your own materials for dyeing. Dyed items will be left overnight at the Art Hub to dry and can be picked up the next evening.

Leigh Waters is an artist who has been having fun and experimenting with dyes since she was a teenager. Her latest passion in dyeing techniques is to find or make resists from found and at hand objects.
