hapax theatre presents THE UGLY DUCHESS

Margaret, Countess of Tyrol, was reputed to be the ugliest woman in history. Nicknamed Maultasch—”Pocket-Mouth”—the rumours of her hideous visage combined with her audacity to rule as a woman made her the perfect scapegoat for the fears and worries of her subjects during the height of the Plague. Despite her reputed ugliness, her lands on the marches of the Holy Roman Empire were valuable and her dynastic ties politically useful for those seeking to rise in the Empire. Caught between these competing forces, Margaret’s story is one exploring gender norms and what power looks like inside a patriarchy.
