Otherworld, What If, and Burning Man are all rooted in radical inclusion, communal effort, and participation, yet many in our communities have spoken up about feeling left out, overlooked, or unsafe. How do we move from good intentions to real belonging?
In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore why inclusivity is essential for true radical community, what psychological and cultural safety really mean, and how to hold space for brave, honest conversations in your camps, crews, and collectives. We'll walk through practical tools to help you create environments where everyone feels seen, respected, and valued, starting from the ground up.
Participants will leave with a set of conversation starters and facilitation tools to take back to their groups, helping seed a culture shift toward deeper connection, shared care, and authentic inclusion. Together, we'll practice the radical interdependence and communal effort that both Alter Arts and Burning Man call us to embody.
Come ready to reflect, connect, and reimagine how we create spaces where everyone can thrive.
The workshop is being hosted by Kerry Cavers (she/her), the founder of both Acronym Consulting and Moms Against Racism Canada. Kerry works at the messy, magical intersections of belonging, justice, and collective care.
Alter Arts Society is a non-profit based in "Victoria" specializing in connecting artists with audiences, facilitating knowledge-sharing, and bringing art to people where they are to create moments of unexpected joy. We host A Cozy Queer Affair, and operate the Community Art Hub makerspace.
In the interest in making our regional events as inclusive as possible, we strongly recommend that each theme camp and art build team select a diversity, equity and inclusion lead to attend the workshop. That person would then lead an inclusion conversation with your group.
