2-time Grammy Award winner vocalist, composer, orchestrator and multi-instrumentalist, Johnaye Kendrick brings her remarkable voice to August’s Jam In The Atrium 1-3 PM this Saturday, August 2nd, free to the public, as always!
Continuing the streak of amazing NW jazz artists visiting the island to share their award winning talents at The Vashon Center For The Arts, Johnaye will be bringing her stunning interpretations of standards and her beautiful originals to the island, along with the wonderful pianist John Hansen, who has performed in previous series shows.
Other nods for her work with the acclaimed vocal ensemble Sajé include Grammy Nominations for Best Arrangement & Instrumental, Win for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals for "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, (Saje, with Jacob Collier)" and Nomination for Best Arrangement, Instrumentals and Vocals for "Desert Song". A dedicated educator, Johnaye serves as Professor of Music at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, as well as a recipient of the Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant, the Marble House Creative Residency, the South Arts Jazz Road Creative Residency, and the Chamber Music America Performance Plus Grant.
Joining Ms Kendrick is one of the most in-demand jazz pianists in the Northwest, keyboardist John Hansen. A studied and musical ensemble player with a strong melodic vocabulary, John has always been recognizable for a unique personal voice., whose performance history includes such venues as NYC's Birdland, The Jazz Standard, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, DC's John F. Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts, Seattle's Jazz Alley and Tula's, festivals and tours in France, Japan, Korea, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Russia and Central America. Besides having performed and recorded with many of the Northwest's premiere, award-winning bands, he has also been invited to perform with The Seattle Symphony, Rick Margitza, Randy Brecker, Ingrid Jensen, Ernestine Anderson, The Woody Herman Orchestra, Bud Shank, Bobby Shew, David 'Fathead' Newman, and more.
