This is the first of many lectures where we will gather as comrades over drinks (available for purchase—non-alcoholic options included) and learn something new.
This month, we will be joined by Dr. Ignacio Adriasola, who is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of British Columbia.
Our topic is “Art & the Unconscious”, where we will explore the hidden depths of the mind which occasionally find their way to the surface as forms of expression.
Date: February 27, 2026
Time: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Location: Aperture Coffee Bar (4124 Main St, Vancouver, BC V5V 3P7)
Dr. Adriasola specializes in the history of art in modern Japan. His research focuses on avant-gardism and the question of art and politics; gender and sexuality in art and visual culture; and the transfer and circulation of objects and ideas to and from Japan in the modern period.
He is the author of “Fragment, Image, and Absence in 1960s Japan” (2022), which examines how Japanese experimental artists responded to rapid social, economic, and environmental change through new approaches to objects, materials, and aesthetics.
His current research explores these themes in contemporary art, with a focus on process-based practices. Dr. Adriasola teaches courses in Japanese and Asian art, modernism, and global modernisms, and advises on projects examining modernism beyond Europe and North America.
