Wednesday, October 1st, 7pm to 8:30pm — In-person discussion (Vancouver)

Short films are a great way for emerging filmmakers to get their feet wet and gain experience in the film industry. They are also good for experienced writers, directors, and producers to shoot a proof-of-concept, fine-tune their skillset, and even get noticed on the festival scene.

One common misconception is that small films are just like shortened features... which is not exactly true. Another misconception is "my short film will get into festivals and win all the awards," but those types of films are a special breed of animal that usually push the boundaries of filmmaking; they aren't your typical tear-jerking Can-drama.

The great thing about being in Vancouver is there is a lot of willing help in the independent community to assist filmmakers with their short films, from crew, equipment, and even locations... and the more preparation the above-the-line team does, the smoother the shoots can be. But there is a lot more involved in a successful short film beyond shooting it.

It's universally agreed that all filmmakers should make at least one short film. Over the past two years, I've shot more than ten short films, most with large crews, and I'm currently thinking up ideas to shoot several more... but as proof-of-concepts for some longer-form projects I'm developing.

For some reason, this fall there are A LOT of people making short films. While a few have asked me to produce for them, I can't join most of them, thus I thought it would be a good idea to help by giving a short talk about short films. I do have an actual workshop that covers everything from writing to financing short films (called the A to Z of Short Filmmaking) that I may do later if there is interest.

Please RSVP and come out.
