While all events are free, we request that you if you can comfortably afford it (or more, if you like!). Arts organizations and festivals across Canada are currently struggling financially. Our funding has decreased by 20% since 2023, while inflation has driven costs much higher.

Join us for a meditative, hands-on workshop in the art of batik as you create your own fabric lantern, beautifully dyed with natural indigo. Guided by Bernarda Antony of The Batik Library, this calming session invites you to slow down and engage in a centuries-old textile tradition.
🖋️Learn to use a canting, a traditional pen-like tool, to draw patterns in hot wax — a technique known as batik tulis or “handwritten batik.” Explore traditional batik motifs and discover how fabric has been used across cultures as a powerful form of storytelling.
🌿 After designing your lantern’s fabric, you'll dye it with rich natural indigo, watching your creation come to life in vibrant blue. This workshop is beginner-friendly, with plenty of time to immerse yourself in the process, whether you're new to batik or have some experience with natural dyes.
🎉 You’ll leave with a lantern ready to be carried in the Moon Festival's Twilight Lantern Procession on October 4!
Recommended for ages 14 and up.
Curious about the process? Watch a short video on batik making.
