Sandy Burnett will be working with the Abos Project for a 3 day masterclass between the 17th and 19th of October.

Sandy Burnett is one of the UK’s most authoritative broadcasters in the field of classical music. His broadcasts, interviews, and lectures are all underpinned by the hands-on experience of being a practising musician.
Following a successful immersion into the music of English composer William Byrd in Valletta in 2023, the Abos Project and visiting director Sandy Burnett turn their attention to Thomas Tallis in a new study programme for October 2025.
While William Byrd flourished towards the end of the sixteenth century, Thomas Tallis is a product of the previous generation. Born around 1505, he lived in interesting times - his eighty-year lifespan witnessed the dissolution of the monasteries, the establishment of the Protestant Church of England, the reversion to Catholicism under Queen Mary in the 1550s, and the return of Protestantism under Queen Elizabeth. The turmoil of the era is reflected in the breadth of the music in the Abos Project’s programme: on the one hand, stunning elaborate polyphony in both Latin and English - the kind of music that would have been sung at court or in cathedrals and college chapels; and on the other, robust hymns and simple rounds that are much more direct in their appeal. As well as bringing the music to life, Sandy Burnett and the Abos Project reflect on what light this remarkable repertoire sheds on a turbulent time for religious worship in England.
