High Waves: Security, Dialogue, and Opportunities for the Mediterranean.
The cradle of civilisation, and the meeting point between two continents, the Mediterranean basin has always served as a site for people to people encounters, cultural, artistic and culinary exchanges, and dialogue across beliefs, ages, and socio-economic backgrounds. Nonetheless, the region has also been frequently linked with political instability, socio-economic and environmental challenges, and unbalance between the technological and socio-economic development of countries in the north, and countries in the south. Demographically, the north and south are once more separated in terms of numbers, and movements. The humanitarian crisis caused by increased political instability, poverty, and inequality, and the surge of populist and right-wing politics across Europe are directly impacting present and future relations in the region. Located at the cross-roads between Africa and Europe, Malta has for centuries absorbed and remodelled influences from all corners of the Mediterranean. This eclectic mix has in no small part contributed to the enrichment of the island’s culture, language, and propensity to be a regional player despite geographical size and limited access to natural and human resources.
This Forum aims to bring together different voices from the Mediterranean to discuss present security, social and humanitarian challenges, but also creatively reflect and discuss the myriad opportunities to rekindle the true potential of a rich, multi-cultural, and successful future for the Mediterranean region and its peoples.
