Towering majestically over the Mediterranean Sea in Calpe, Peñón de Ifach is an essential adventure for any visitor to the Costa Blanca. This massive limestone rock is a protected Natural Park and a symbol of the Valencian coast, offering a challenging yet incredibly rewarding 6-kilometer round-trip hike. The initial trail is a well-maintained, gentle ascent through lush Mediterranean scrubland that provides continuous views of Calpe's port, beaches, and the famed pink salt flats, home to seasonal flamingos.
The true excitement begins halfway up, where the path funnels through a narrow, hand-carved tunnel that plunges you into the rock's core. Beyond this point, the route transforms into a demanding climb: the trail becomes rockier, steeper, and more exposed, with some sections requiring light scrambling and the use of fixed chains and ropes for stability. Reaching the summit, where you can literally feel the sea breeze from all directions, is an achievement that rewards you with an unmatched, breathtaking panorama that—on a clear day—allows you to see as far as the island of Ibiza.
In addition to our summit triumph, we'll head back down to the coast to enjoy a peaceful stroll around the beautiful salt lake, the Salinas de Calpe. Here, we can relax and look for the resident flocks of flamingos and other fascinating migratory birds before concluding the day.
