Embark on a unique adventure where the trail meets the stream along the beautiful Barranco de Aguas Negras in the Sierra de Espadán. This route offers a captivating immersion into the natural park's distinct landscape, characterized by the striking contrast of lush green forest and the famed reddish rodeno rock formations. Our hike will primarily involve following and crossing the clear mountain stream as it carves its way through the ravine, demanding sure footing and a spirit of adventure. You'll navigate over slippery stones, requiring multiple careful crossings. Some sections may be easy hops, while others will be deep enough to require taking off your hiking boots—so be prepared for wet feet and bring water shoes or a spare pair of socks! This journey is a true delight for those who appreciate the vibrant ecosystems found along Spain's mountain waterways.
After the refreshing and engaging traverse through the ravine, the route ascends toward the second highest point of the park: Pico Espadán (1,099m). The Sierra de Espadán is famous for its extensive forests of cork oaks and pines, creating a breathtaking canopy that shelters the trail. Reaching the summit rewards your efforts with spectacular 360-degree panoramic views that can stretch out over the entire Sierra, and often as far as the Mediterranean Sea and the Penyagolosa massif. This circular hike perfectly combines the intimate, water-side beauty of the Barranco with the grand, expansive vistas from one of Castellón's most emblematic peaks, making for a truly memorable day out.
