Spring Cleaning at Davidson Canyon (Sept. 7)

Where We're Going

We'll be heading out to a spring in upper Davidson Canyon to the east of Tucson. The spring goes seasonally dry but supports a beautiful array of riparian plants including willows, ashes, and cottonwoods. We'll meet at the Highway 83 South and I-10 turnoff to carpool to the site (carpooling is also available from our SIA office in Tucson). This site is at low elevation, so it may be quite warm. We're getting an early start, and if we finish at one spring, we'll relocate to the second spring in Davidson Canyon, closer to the Gabe Zimmerman Trailhead.

What We're Doing

These spring sites have tamarisk seedlings that we plan on hand pulling. Staff and Pima County personnel have aready removed the large trees, so we will also be checking on any regrowth of those trees. We'll do a creek walk in the sandy-bottomed wash, spreading out to check for any tamarisk seedlings we can find. We'll pull these up and bag them to take offsite, or we'll put them up out of the floodplain to dessicate on site.

Footing will be uneven and potentially unstable as this is an active wash. We'll have a full safety briefing in advance so everyone is prepared to work at the site.

What to Bring

• Water (we will have some, but we may be away from the car for a few hours, so bring at least 3 liters!)
• Snacks, lunch
• Medications, first-aid kit
• Sunscreen
• Sun hat
• Long sleeves/long pants/closed-toed shoes
• Gloves (we also have some)
• Hiking poles (if you like to use them)
