Since 1987, efforts to document Bali’s traditional healers (Balian) have faced a core challenge: authentic Balian do not advertise or seek recognition—their knowledge is believed to be spiritually received, not taught. Attempts to bring them into formal settings, from university seminars to hospital programs, have largely failed due to the deeply personal and sacred nature of their practice, which is tied to family shrines and ancestral spirits.
Despite skepticism from the medical world, some professionals—like Dr. Adi Putera and Dr. Luh Ketut Suryani—are bridging the gap between science and spirit. Still, interest in traditional herbal medicine is fading, and access to sacred knowledge and rare plants is becoming increasingly difficult.
