Bali is at a crossroads. The surge of mass tourism and rapid overdevelopment threaten its natural landscapes and cultural heritage, while industrialized food systems undermine traditional farming and local health.
Astungkara Way offers a different path, uniting regenerative travel and farming to create immersive experiences that reconnect people with Bali’s villages, ecosystems, and food systems. This unique approach bridges tourism and agriculture, building genuine connections between travellers and rural Balinese families restoring their environment and way of life.
In this talk, anthropologist and experience designer Desli Togatorop (Eci) shares her work as part of the team behind the Astungkara Trail, a 135 km walk across the island that invites travellers to slow down and experience Bali through the eyes of its people, land, and traditions.
One of the key stops along the trail is Astungkara Way’s headquarters, where I Gusti Ngurah Prabu Wira Sanjaya (Prabu) contributes to a regenerative farming initiative alongside local rice farmers. As a pest and disease specialist, he helps apply the Complex Rice System, which blends traditional knowledge with regenerative practices to restore soil health, increase biodiversity, and support food sovereignty.
Together, they’ll share stories from the field, offering a grounded look at how thoughtful travel and farming can help shape a more resilient future for Bali.
